Adonis aestivalis L.

Flora Europaea

the original Linnean specimen

This species is said to differ from the closely related Adonis annua L. by having the sepals tightened to the back of the corolla. As it can be seen from the photographs set from Stana de Mures, Alba county below, this is not true and can lead to confusions. The scarlet color and form of the petals however differs in this species from the deep dark red and shorter petals of Adonis annua L. which is also later in concerning the flowering period. See this here for Adonis aestivalis L. and here and here for Adonis annua L. See the hairy sepals of the closely related Adonis flammea Jacq (here again). Also the achenes have two teeth on the ventral side in Adonis aestivalis and no teeth in Adonis annua.

Stana de Mures, Alba county, 14th of May 2005.
